Coquitlam Lawyer: Driverless cars - Is the technology ready?

As you may have read, two people were killed near Houston, Texas in a 2019 Tesla Model S; it is alleged that no one was behind the wheel. The famous - some would say infamous - Elon Musk as has stated on record that the “autopilot” of the Tesla vehicle was not enabled.

Once pitched as futuristic fantasies better suited for Back to the Future II, driverless cars - or “autonomous vehicles” (AV) - are becoming realities. However, questions remain; in particular:

  1. Are the safe?

  2. How can they regulated by the government, insurers, and by legislation?

The US is far ahead of Canada when it comes to preparing for the future re driverless cars however, there have been questions whether the technology is as advanced as the demand is high. We will be do a series of articles on AVs and the issues therein.
